I started out by applying the Daniel Smith watercolor ground to the mini canvas. I love this ground that gives me an opportunity to paint with watercolor on just about any surface. This ground also makes a great primer for acrylics and pastels. Working in layers I can build the painting up and can also remove the paint easily to create highlights. In some areas I do resort to using white gouache to get the effects I am looking for.
My sister gave me some seedings of the Calendula one year and it has been growing effortlessly in my garden since. Considered an annual it reseeds itself in abundance. I like to tuck it in between my other flowers. The painting above is of a bud beginning to open. Once open they resemble a diasy.
Look for more mini canvas paintings coming up in the month of January.
From Wikipedia: Calendula has been used traditionally as both a culinary and medicinal herb. The petals are edible and can be used fresh in salads or dried and used to color cheese or as a replacement for saffron.
Enjoy,
