Life changes when you bring a new pet into your life and make a commitment to take care of this precious pet. Most of my readers know that Bonnie flew into my life about a week ago. She stayed close to my yard and it took four days to capture her. I say 'she' because after doing some research and talking with a breeder I have concluded my little Budgie is a four year old female. My friend Julie gave me her cage she was no longer using so all I had to do was fill it with feeder cups, toys, and perches. Hours were spent at the pet stores making decisions on what to buy and not buy. Not having a clue what this Budgie might be used to eating or playing with has made this whole experience a guessing game. So far we are doing fine and Bonnie seems to be adapting along with Lily my cat. Now we are all in training and setting boundaries. Once I feel confident and Bonnie feels confident with me I'll close off the upstairs where she stays with me in the studio and let her fly. Lily will stay downstairs on these occasions. Life is always changing and you never know who or what will appear when you least expect it.
My graphic work has really slowed up and I am trying to remain confident we will make it till Don graduates this August and finds a job. On a good note we made the final payment on our car in May. On a bad note someone hit my parked car at the grocery store and did not leave a note. Just one more thing to deal with.
I keep telling myself to paint, sketch, and get busy finishing my web site but somehow I find distractions. Having this sketch and layout of the Loggerhead Shrike on my studio desk has helped so you get to see a work in progress. My first sketch can be seen here. Next step was transferring to canvas coated with clear gesso and masking out some of the branches below the Shrike.

Beautiful! I am wondering about a few things. You say you "transferred the drawing to canvas". What did you use to transfer the drawing? And, since this is watercolor, is this a watercolor canvas?
Oh I was wondering if you'd catch your little visitor. I should have know you would. I'm glad she is settling in.
Love the watercolor - you make it look so easy!
I think you were supposed to have Bonnie, that's why she flew in and landed on you. Hope all goes well with her, you and Lily. Your next painting will be fun to watch, it looks great already.
I'm glad you finally captured the budgie. Can't wait to see the work in progress. It's lovely.
I'm so glad she's decided to be a sensible budgie and live with you! She's as cute as can be!
Love the WIP! Your background washes are gorgeous. Looking forward to the progress.
How wonderful! Bonnie couldn't have found a better home... she gets lots of love and her portrait painted!
I was wondering too... but I'm happy to see Bonnie has chosen to live with you ;)
The watercolour is progressing so nicely, I can't wait to see it finished.
Love your new family member. She is so lucky to have found you! Enjoyed seeing your painting in progress. I sometimes wonder how I made it without painting...
Your garden is lovely too!
It's been awhile since I've visited and I was blown away by your beautiful work, great stories (so glad you rescued Ms. Bonnie!), wonderful bird and garden photos and your gorgeous website. What a treat it was to visit today. Birds are so delightful and no matter whether pigeons, crows, or pretty little things, they always make me feel happy. I loved the pics of Lilly and window feeder -- kitty TV!
Hi Angie, I use graphite paper to make the transfer and I apply clear gesso to raw canvas to paint on.
Thanks Karen, she is a chatter box. :)
Diane yes I feel the same way. She was meant to be here.
Thanks Carolyn.
Thanks Laure, ha sensible! We will see.
Carla she will be fun to paint.
thanks Bonny for checking in.
Vickie, new member indeed. It should be fun.
Oh I am so happy for you and for the Parakeet!
Cant wait to see the finished product.
I'm really glad you managed to catch her :D
the background on that Shrike piece is gorgeous! the colours are just wonderful :D
I'm so pleased Bonnie chose you. Great to see a natural perch for her feet. Have you discovered yet just how *hard* a budgie can bite! I know from experience LOL
Love the WIP too.
We always had parakeets growing up - they are great little birds and can be very social, one of ours liked to go outside with me to see my horses - she loved them, would sit on their heads...
Love how your new paitning looks!!!
...oh she is a sweetie! She looks a lot like Gomez. I had him for 11 years. Love watching your painting come to life!
That's really a cool thing about how Bonnie chose you to settle down with. You sure don't see that every day. Good luck with her and your new adventure.
