Out of nowhere he flew in and landed on my back briefly as I bent over to tie my shoe. As I moved to see what was there he jumped down to the table top. Before me was a beautiful white and blue with touches of black accents bird. As my husband, myself and my neighbor stood stunned at our unexpected visitor I thought "Little one you sure are a long way from home". He looked tired and a bit stressed out so I gathered some seed and brought out some water in a bowl along with my camera and took photos while he ate and drank. Now I had to start thinking how I can capture this little Budgie. I missed my opportunity when he first flew in and was still tired. I should have made a move then to grab him but could not think fast enough and kept wondering what do I put him in.
As the day wore on it became more difficult as he flew easily now from tree to tree in the back yard. I posted his picture on facebook and received lots of great advice like buy some parakeet food and put it in a cage to lure him in. I remembered my cat carrier and came real close several times to capturing it but every time I made it to close the door he flew out just in time. He was getting wiser. Another day passed and still no luck. He is now making friends with the other birds and eats with the Morning Doves. My friend Julie then let me barrow her unused bird cage but still he is leery of going near the cage even though the food is there. He began observing the other birds and where they were feeding and figured out to go beneath the feeders to find fallen seeds. We are going on the forth day now and he still comes back knowing he will find food and water. I am comforted in knowing he still comes and hopeful I will be able to capture him and give him a good home.
The garden needed a lot of tending to and the garden chairs need a face lift. This ladder back chair was rescued from my sons house in Delaware and I have used it for potted plants for a couple of years now. Last year it gave way and fell apart so last fall I brought it into my basement to dry out over winter. After gluing it back together it got a coat of primer and then some color. I have been attacked to yellow lately and find it to be a good color to go with everything.
Now my yellow ladder back is waiting for me to pot some flowers and adorn it.
Since I was on a roll I looked at my tired worn garden bench in the back garden and knew it needed some tender attention also.
Again for me yellow seemed to be the right color. It just makes me smile. Now to make time to work on all my pots.

How wonderful to know that he's getting fed and is coming back! You might try getting something he really likes, holding it near your hand, and then just walking into the house with him on you. I've done that, too! Your garden furniture is ravishing. I like a bluish purple--it seems to go with everything in the garden (a tip from Thalassa Crusoe). My theory is it's because shadows have so much violet in them. But your yellow works, too!
I wish you good luck in catching the pretty guy. Have you tried tying fishing line to the cage door and run it to (or through your house's door or window) and then pull the door shut when he is in there so you don't need to get close to the cage? I've done that with other animals and it seems to work most of the time. You'd have to be quick about it and make sure you don't loosen up the line so the door won't reopen when he flies around a bit. I love your bench and chair. You have a happy garden!
What as delightful story of your budgie, Toni I do hope he realises how he has lucked out finding you and gets into his cage quick smart.
Love your ladder chair too. Now you've painted it you really have to Paint it :) Of course there is a very good chance that when the children see it looking so smart they might decamp with it!
Julie thank you for all your help. I wish I had the bird magnetism you have. I'm trying really I am.
A bluish purple hey. Nice thing about it is that it is paint and can be redone another year or later.
Linda excellent idea about the fishing line. I'll have to give it a try.
Robyn, I do hope so also. I would love to give him a good home.
The kids like to garden but it is mostly vegetables. I don't think they will want it back but who knows. hehe they will have to wait.
I can't see much of the other leg of the bird, but does it have a band on it? I see all the birds in the pet shops have a band on one of their legs.
Hi John,
yes he does have a red band on. This signifies that he was conceived and born here in the States and not brought in from over seas.
Oh Toni, what a fun story! The budgie is beautiful and makes you wonder what is the story about him. I bet someone is missing him.
I love yellow also cuz it is such a happy color. And it looks great on your furniture in the garden.
I am so happy he is coming back...hopefully you will eventually capture him and keep him safe!
Your garden looks lovely and I like the yellow chair!
It sounds as if that budgie is used to flying free and has his wits about him. e once has a budgie that colour and he became very tame.
I love the yellow highlights on your garden furniture. What a splash of joy they will bring on a dull day.

I sure hope you can catch him Toni. Such a pretty little bird, I would guess someone is missing him.
This little guy knew just where to come for food, shelter and compassion, didn't he. I'm confident that you'll be able to eventually get him into a cage. He seems to be quite happy, though, with the other birds. Good luck.
hopefully you catch him soon, but at least he knows where he can get some food :)
your bench and chair look completely new just with a new coat of paint.way cheaper then buying new ones
Toni, I love your blog and enjoy seeing all of the birds and your art. What is the secret to attracting so many different birds? They are so beautiful! I have two feeders in my yard that I recently put out. So far I have only seen a pair of cardinals on one of them. Any tips for a novice?
Thanks, Chris
I love the story of you little visitor - he's a lucky one. Your garden furniture looks so refreshing in yellow and that garden is off to a great start. I'm waiting for some little birds to leave the birdhouse before I start cleaning out one of my flowerbeds - it is really in need of a good cleaning. You are inspiring!
Wow! A budgie at the feeders. I do hope you can capture him. Happy as he is right now, it's not the life for him.
I love your chair and garden.
I loved your story about the bird. It will be neat to see what happens. Isn't it fun?
And your color paint. The old chair is darling! I love the color. Now I must ask, what color and paint type?
And I always love your stories and art work.
Thanks.
xoxs,
Janet
What a surprise to a bird land on your back - tired and hungry! I'm wondering now ...if he is still hanging around? Neat story!
I love the yellow rocker and bench accents!
I had a little Budgie (Gomez) that looked just like your sweet little visitor. He lived to be eleven years old. Glad you're putting food and water out for him. (Love the yellow paint on your garden furniture!) Love that Loggerhead Shrike sketch below!
